Episode Summary

Storytellers: Longshot, Stormwolfe
Timeframe: June - July 11, 1875

The Long Road Home is the pilot episode of Sagas of the Wild West. It tells the stories of the primary characters, how they meet, and how they all arrive in the mythical version of the town of Kalispell in the territory of Montana.

After spending eight years drifting from job to job on the western frontier, Jess Harper finally settled down on the Sherman Ranch and Relay Station in Laramie, Wyoming. He has a good job riding shotgun and overseeing security for the Grand Central Stagecoach Company and is co-manager of the ranch. Jess was hoping to put his past and reputation as a fast-gun behind him.

Quentin Cantrell has made a new life for himself after the horrors of the Civil War. His home is in San Francisco, the western hub of culture and society. Cantrell is not the typical, run-of-the-mill gunfighter. He is well known as a troubleshooter, a man who was willing to do whatever it took to fix someone's problem, including the ultimate solution.

In the early weeks of July 1975, Cantrell arrives on the Sherman Ranch followed by a small mob of gunmen. After the dust settled from the shootout, he informs Jess that Chance Harper, his wife, Regina - Cantrell's sister - and two of their four children were killed in an Indian raid while traveling back from Missoula to their ranch near Kalispell. Jess has been named as the guardian of the two youngest children. The two men set off for Montana.

Along the way, they encounter several obstacles to completing their journey and meet others making the same trip for different reasons.
